There are 12 cranial nerves in the body. The vagus nerve is the tenth, and longest nerve. It runs from the brain stem and passes through the neck and thorax, which includes the cavity enclosed by the ribs, breastbone, the dorsal vertebrae. It continues through the chest, which encompasses main organs of circulation and respiration, and continues towards the colon.

Some cranial nerves send sensory information while others control motor function. The Vagus nerve has both functions. It interfaces with the parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs and digestive tract.
